Accomplishments

Economic Development

  • Was the lead Councillor supporting the Lansdowne Redevelopment, ensuring its realization
  • Spearheaded the development of La Cité Collégiale in Orléans.
  • Worked with the organizers of Carivibe to bring the festival to Orléans
  • Created the inaugural Caribbean parade on St. Joseph in 2010
  • Works with organizers from the Haitien Festival to ensure the success of the event in Orléans every year
  • Facilitated the development of Orléans’ first hotel in 30 years: Quality Inn
  • Worked in partnership with Forum Inc in the development of our $220 million Orléans Town Centre
  • Spearheaded the return of professional baseball in Ottawa, working with various groups to see baseball in 2010
  • Helped create the inaugural St Joseph BIA with Councillor Bloess
  • Donated a power sprayer to the St Joseph BIA to encourage the business community to be graffiti free
  • Working to save commercial employment lands for Orleans residents to work, live and play in their community
  • Played a key role in the negotiation and opening of the Shenkman Arts Centre
  • Supported the development of social housing at 260 Tompkins blvd
  • Worked with East End Councillors to obtain funding for the extension of Hunt Club
  • Partnered with the East End Councillors, obtained $20M for the Orléans community in infrastructure stimulus funding
  • Currently working with Holiday Inn Express for the construction of a second hotel in Orléans located in the Town Centre
  • Collaborated with Forum Inc. to ensure the construction and marketing of an 80,000 sq.ft. commercial building in the Town Centre.
  • Contacted the owner of CinéStarz to have a theater opened in Orléans
  • Facilitated the move of 80 jobs to Orléans with Venus Cyber Security
  • Assisted in finding a location for a second hotel in Orléans: Holiday Inn
  • Championed Brigil's Petrie's Landing III by working over 18 months to secure 22 storeys of employment which can accomodate 2100 jobs

Environment

  • Uncovered the gate malfunction at the ROPEC facility, generating discussion and attention from all levels of government
  • Initiated the Auditor Generals Report which uncovered the maligned corporate culture in the sewar & waste water division.
  • Championed the Ottawa River Action Plan, where all three levels of government committed money towards cleaning the Ottawa River
  • Initiated the pilot use of Meeker’s Magic Mix at Petrie Island to deter geese from staying at the beach
  • Creating a fund of $100 million dollars to deal with the sewage spills, which have been out flowing into the Ottawa River
  • Initiated and put forward a motion to increase the flood protection grant ensuring all residents affected receive 100% coverage up to a $4,000
  • Helps with annual clean up of Petrie Island
  • Spearheaded the saving of Hiawatha Park
  • Formed the Petrie Islands inaugural Advisory Committee
  • Championed the pilot project of Goose Buster's to deter geese away from the Petrie Island beaches
  • Assisted to get the Orléans Butterfly garden opened in Terry Fox Park
  • Worked with the Cardinal Creek Community Association to plant trees in the community
  • Worked with the Cardinal Creek Community Association to ensure the preservation of the Cardinal Creek Karst

Youth Initiatives

  • Created the Students in Motion (SIM) group, with representatives from all high schools in Ward 1
  • Held a Winterfest and hosted the first four-school Coffee House concert in conjunction with SIM
  • Instituted Orléans’s first mural wall on Hwy 174 with the help of Bruce Firestone and the Mural Arts program
  • Helped complete a second mural for the St-Joseph Parrish representing the 150 years of history of Orléans in partnership with the Orléans BIA and KeepSix.
  • Built Orléans’s first legal graffiti wall at the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex – Orléans
  • Facilitated the construction and timely opening of Glandriel Park in Cardinal Creek
  • Purchased a volleyball net for Glandriel Park at the request of residents expanding needed recreational services in Cardinal Creek
  • Purchased a skateboard ramp for the Orléans Skate Park
  • Cleaned up the overgrown shrubs covering the mural on St. Joseph Boulevard
  • Worked with City staff to ensure that little league baseball could enjoy the Municipal Stadium during the 2009 season
  • Championed the advancement on Park 18B in Cardinal Creek by 3 years
  • Participates and sponsors the annual Orléans Soapbox Derby
  • Donated to Cairine Wilson for the construction of an outdoor volleyball court
  • Obtained a pedestrian crossing for St. Matthew's High School students
  • Helped start a Rideau Canoe Satellite Club at Petrie Island
  • Hosted Youth Summits for Orléans High School students
  • Hosted the opening of the splash pad at Cardinal Creek Community park

Seniors Programs

  • Initiated the start up of first ever seniors park in Eastern Ontario, (Cumberland Seniors Park) Centrum Blvd
  • Hosts an annual Canada Day Seniors Bingo at the Cumberland Seniors Park
  • Secured office space for the MAO, Centre Seraphin Marion, and Roy G. Hobbs at 255 Centrum Boulevard
  • Initiated free parking passes for Seniors Organizations to enjoy Petrie Island
  • Supported the expansion of the Résidence St-Louis for seniors
  • Supported the expansion of Orléans Boulevard to Résidence St. Louis to avoid impact on surrounding street
  • Named the Seniors park in Orléans after the Royal 22e Régiment

Transportation

  • Created a new Park and Ride at the Bob MacQuarrie Recreation Complex - Orléans
  • Created a new Park and Ride at the Ray Friel Centre
  • Worked with all levels of government and municipal politicians on the Gatineau side of the river to insure Kettle Island is the recommended preferred bridge location.
  • Got the pathway from 10 th Line Road to Hiawatha paved residents can now get downtown using the path
  • Decreased the speed limit on Trim Rd to 60km
  • Decreased speed limit on Hiawatha to 40 km
  • Worked with East End councillors in getting Light Rail to Blair within the first phase of the Transportation Master Plan
  • Initiated better bus service for the residents of Gerald Street
  • Helped CNIB persons gain access to services offered by Para Transpo
  • Fought for OC Transpo bus pass refunds during the strike.
  • Held public consultations and meet with staff to ensure OC Transpo’s TransPlan 2009 did not reduce services in Orléans and met the needs of residents
  • Increased the safety and convenience for transit users with a bus stop on North Service Road
  • Was the only Councillor to demand an open house for Transplan 2009
  • Established route 20A and 20B so that express service would not be lost on Princess Louise
  • Demanded the reinstatement of route 136 to maintain service for Sir Wilfred Laurier and along 10 th line road.
  • Increased the frequency of trips on express routes 20 and 35
  • Obtained $250,000 in funding for the resurfacing of the pathway and road on Hiawatha Park Road
  • Worked with the East End Councillors to advance the environmental assessment for the 174 widening.
  • Partnered with East End Councillors to obtain $10 million dollars in funding for repairs to the 174 from Blair to Montreal Road
  • Obtained $2 million dollars in funding for the expansion of the Trim Park and Ride (380 spots)
  • Collaborated with the Cardinal Creek Community Association to ensure signalised crossings would be at key intersections on Trim Road to ensure the safety of children.
  • Obtained over $40 million dollars for the widening and realignment of Trim Road as well as the widening of St-Joseph Boulevard.

Community

  • Formed the East End Presidents Council
  • Works closely with the Orléans Cumberland Community Resource Centre to ensure needs of residents are met
  • Preserved agricultural heritage by saving the Cow on the roof of Cheddar Et Cetera
  • Worked hand in hand with Muslim community to make the mosque a reality
  • Founded the Orléans Multicultural Committee
  • Annual investigation through ward neighbourhoods for graffiti to have it cleaned by the City
  • Helped start the Cardinal Creek Community Association
  • Helped setup and re-establish the Convent Glen Community Association
  • Helped to re-establish the Chatelaine Village Community Association
  • Supported the Habitat for Humanity construction of two homes in Chatelaine Village
  • Petitioned Queens Park for a fair Hydro system for all of Orléans residents
  • Led the charge to create new procedures within the needle exchange program making our city cleaner and safer
  • Created history by implementing and helping to organize the first Auxiliary Police Unit in Ottawa
  • Enhanced and expanded the graffiti management strategy
  • Spearheaded the repair of the Orléans Woods community entrance sign
  • Supported the Phase 2 development of the Bilberry Creek Baptist Church
  • Co-sponsored the “Name the Park” contest with the Cardinal Creek Community Association
  • Worked in collaboration with residents and the police department to apprehend people responsible for hedge fires in Fallingbrook
  • Facilitated the creation of the Common Sense Crossing group
  • Initiated the relocation of bleachers from Big Bird Park and coordinated bleacher installation at Marsha Park.
  • Worked with members of SFOPHO to add the Silo Vinette to the Heritage registry
  • Helped the Cardinal Creek Community Association get residents to sign up for the Neighbourhood Watch program
  • Purchased a new play structure for Wincanton Park and Joe Jamison park
  • Helped to pay for renovations at the Orléans Tennis Club
  • Supported the Orléans Bengals anti-bullying campaign.
  • Fought paid parking at 2555 St-Joseph Boulevard
  • Recognized community leaders at annual Volunteer recognition event
  • Helped get the Cardinal Creek Community Park completed 2 years ahead of schedule
  • Advanced the construction of Royal Ridge Park in Cardinal Creek

Health

  • Worked with Ottawa Public Health to move up the time for wristbands given out to reduce wait times in the cold weather for H1N1 vaccines.
  • Sent a letter to the Minister of Health to inquire about the possibility of having military personal aid with vaccination clinics to speed up vaccination times.
  • Initiated inquiry that created Citizens Heroism Award, celebrating two residents and a City staff who performed life saving measures for a resident of Orléans.
  • Initiated safety measures for swimmers at all Ottawa beaches, including Petrie Island.
  • Facilitated monthly First Aid courses in Orléans
